Unlocking Insights for First-Time Dashboard Builders

Timeline

June โ€“ Sept 2025

Role

UX Design Intern

Tools

Figma, Subframe, Lovable

Team

RAP UX Team, Product Managers, Software Engineers

This 12-week internship with the Reporting & Analytics Platform (RAP) team focused on improving the customer experience (CX) dashboard experience for first-time users. The goal was to simplify the widget-selection process, minimizing trial and error, and ensuring users felt confident they were choosing the most effective widget for the metrics that mattered to them.

I integrated AI tools such as Subframe, Lovable, and Figma Make into my design and research workflow, which allowed me to rapidly ideate and iterate on concepts. Through concept testing, I uncovered insights that validated bold design directions and refined solutions into experiences that felt intuitive, engaging, and impactful for new customers.

Dashboard Creation Broke Down Immediately After Setup

Dashboard Creation Broke Down Immediately After Setup

Through auditing the experience, synthesizing past research, and mapping insights into a user journey, three reasons for this emerged.

Blank starts with no direction

Users landed on empty dashboards with little guidance on what to do next or how to begin.

Trial-and-error widget selection

Without context, users relied on guesswork when choosing widgets, often needing multiple attempts to find something that worked.

Overwhelming data configuration

The flexibility of the system exposed too many options at once, increasing the likelihood of misconfigured or empty visualizations.

Therefore I asked,

How might we streamline the process of selecting the right widget for users to reduce trial and error?

Ideation

Learning from Competitors

I analyzed patterns across multiple dashboard and data-visualization tools to understand how other products guide users through dashboard creation.

Defining Direction

Drawing on competitive insights and past research, I explored a broad solution space, ideating dozens of concepts to define potential directions for a clearer, more guided dashboard experience.

Feature Prioritization & Prototypes

Simple & North Star Features

Through design critiques, I prioritized 20 solutions that addressed the most critical pain points identified in prior research. These ideas were grouped into three distinct user flows, which came together as three prototype concepts for further exploration and testing.

Research & Iteration

Concept Testing

I concept tested the three prototypes with 9 novice participants to understand user attitudes, perceptions, and trust toward new dashboard creation concepts, helping identify and refine the strongest solutions for further development.

Shaping the Future of Dashboard Creation

Shaping the Future of Dashboard Creation

My work resulted in three short-term UX recommendations and one north-star concept that helped guide future dashboard direction.

Short-Term

The short-term recommendations were grounded in research and shared with the team to inform ongoing design work. One set of findings was used directly by another designer, while the remaining recommendations prompted collaboration between design, product, and engineering to assess feasibility and effort.

North Star

The north-star concept extended beyond near-term improvements. A product manager proposed creating an engineering proof of concept to explore its potential and support future investment discussions, helping move the idea from exploration toward validation.

Documentation is Key

Documenting all design changes is necessary for effective communication with other Designers, PM, and Engineering and see my progress over the course of the internship.
