Background

Consumerism drives overconsumption, contributing to significant environmental damage through increased waste, pollution, and resource depletion. Influenced by advertising, trends, and social media, consumers often purchase more than necessary, reinforcing unsustainable production and disposal practices. Despite growing awareness of environmental issues, many shoppers remain unaware of the long-term impacts of their decisions.

Contextual Inquiries

Contextual
Inquiries

Our primary stakeholders are consumers and businesses involved in online shopping. To understand consumer behavior and ad influence, we conducted contextual inquiries with diverse participants, including frequent shoppers and environmentally conscious individuals.

Findings

  1. Ads appeared approximately every 7-10 videos on TikTok.

  2. Frequent exposure to ads drove impulsive purchases with little to no consideration for environmental impact.

  3. Most consumers overlooked sustainability and were influenced by trends and convenience.

  4. Eco-conscious consumers actively researched products and company practices before making purchases.

Problem

Consumers, particularly students, face significant pressure to purchase trending products online, driven by frequent advertisements and social media influence. This often leads to impulsive buying decisions that contribute to excessive waste and environmental harm.

How might we…

help consumers make environmentally conscious decisions when purchasing online?

help consumers find sustainable businesses to support?

Solution

Our solution is a Google Chrome extension paired with a companion website designed to provide real-time sustainability information to consumers during online shopping. This tool addresses the lack of accessible environmental data by displaying key insights directly on eCommerce sites, allowing users to make informed purchasing decisions. The Chrome extension seamlessly integrates into the shopping experience, overlaying sustainability ratings (Eco-Scores) on product pages and offering insights into company practices and product life cycles.

Features

  1. Eco-Score Display: A simple, visible rating system that appears on eCommerce sites, summarizing a company’s environmental impact.

  2. Comparison Tool: Allows users to compare multiple companies based on sustainability practices.

  3. Alternative Product Suggestions: Highlights eco-friendly alternatives when a product or company scores low on sustainability.

  4. Learn More Button: Directs users to a dedicated website with detailed reviews of company practices, sustainability reports, and consumer feedback.
