Overview

What is Dialed?

Dialed is a mobile-first concept that helps home espresso brewers track their brews, learn from others, and dial in coffee beans faster with less waste. As espresso machines like Breville show up in more homes, people keep struggling to brew consistently good espresso, there are just too many variables to track by memory.

The Problem

Dialing in espresso is difficult and wasteful

Every new coffee requires adjusting grind size, dose, yield, and brew time. Without structured tracking, most people fall back on memory, a random notes app, or straight trial-and-error, wasting beans along the way.

Framing the Challenge

How might we help people dial in faster?

I asked myself: how might home espresso brewers dial in new beans faster by learning from their own past brews and from what’s worked for other people? That question shaped everything that came after it.

Framing the challenge

Ideation

Turning every shot into a learning moment

Dialed gives home brewers one place to log brews, track outcomes, and learn from community data. Instead of starting from zero with every new bag of coffee, people can see how others brewed it and what actually worked.

Prioritization & Prototyping

Log every shot, then dial in faster

Users log grind size, dose, yield, brew time, and tasting notes, turning each shot into a real data point instead of a forgotten experiment. A timeline view lets them revisit past brews to see which settings actually worked, so they can repeat what’s good and skip what isn’t.

Dial in faster

Community

Learning from everyone else

People can publish their results publicly and see how others brewed a specific bean before opening their own bag. Instead of guessing, they walk in with a community-tested starting point and iterate from there.

Impact & Outcomes

What would make this a win

The targets: 50% faster dial-in time on new beans, 80%+ of users feeling more confident experimenting with unfamiliar coffee, and less wasted coffee overall while people learn.

Reflection

Where it’s headed

Dialed is live and in active development, I’m building the codebase myself with Claude Code, which has let me carry this from a design concept all the way to a working iOS app on my own.
